Artificial intelligence works by simulating human intelligence in machines through algorithms, data and models. Artificial intelligence understands and responds to human language. Artificial intelligence acts independently, replacing the needs for human intelligence.

Artificial intelligence can be generally categorized into three main types:

Narrow Artificial Intelligence

Narrow Artificial intelligence also known’s as weak Artificial intelligence. It is the only type that exists today. Any others forms of Artificial intelligence is theoretical. It can be trained to performs a single task, often far faster and better than a human mind can. However, it cannot perform outside of its defined task. Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and IBM Watson are the examples of Narrow Artificial Intelligence.

General Artificial Intelligence

General AI


Artificial General Intelligence is also known’s as strong artificial intelligence. It is today nothing more than a theoretical concept. Artificial General Intelligence can use previous learning and skills to accomplish new tasks in a different context without the need for human beings to train the underlying models. This ability allows General Artificial Intelligence to learn and performs any intellectual task that a human being can.

Super Artificial Intelligence

Super AI


Super Artificial Intelligence is commonly referred to as Artificial Super Intelligence. If ever realized, Super Artificial Intelligence would think, reason, learns and hold cognitive abilities that exceed those of human beings. The applications possessing Super Artificial Intelligence capabilities will have evolved beyond the point of understanding human sentiments and experiences to feel emotions, posse’s beliefs and desires of their own.

Reactive Machine AI

Reactive Machine AI


Reactive machines are AI systems with no memory and are designed to perform a very specific task. Since, they cannot recollect previous outcomes or decisions. They only work with presently available data. Reactive AI stems from statistical maths and can analyze vast amount of data to produce a seemingly intelligent outputs.

Examples of Reactive Machine AI

IBM Deep Blue: IBM chess-playing super computer AI beat chess grand master Garry Kasparov in the late 1990s by analyzing the pieces on the board and predicting the probable outcomes of each move.

Netflix Recommendation Engine: Netflix viewing Recommendations are powered by models that process data sets collected from viewing history to provide customers with content they are most likely to enjoy.

Limited Memory AI

Limited Memory AI


Unlike reactive machines AI, this form of AI can recall past events, outcomes and monitor specific objects or situations over times. Limited Memory AI can use past and present moment data to decide on a course of action most likely to help achieve a desired outcome. It cannot retain data in a library of past experiences to use over a long-term period. Limited Memory AI can improve in performance.

Examples of Limited Memory AI

Generative AI: Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Bard and DeepAI rely on Limited Memory AI to predict the next word and phrase.

Virtual Assistants and Chatbots: Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant and IBM Watson Assistant combine natural language processing and Limited Memory AI to understand questions and requests take appropriate actions and compose responses.

Theory of Mind AI

Theory of Mind AI


Theory of mind AI is a functional class of AI that falls beneath the General AI. Artificial intelligence with the theory of mind functionality would understand the thoughts and emotions to others entities. This understanding would affect how the AI would interact with those around them. In theory, it would allow the AI to simulate human-like relationships. Theory of Mind AI supposes human reasoning. It would also be able to understand artwork and essays, the Generative AI tools are unable to do. Emotion of Mind AI is a theory of Mind AI currently in development. Emotion AI would unable to understand and respond to human feelings.

Example ChatGPT can generate human-like text, enabling applications such as content creations, chatbots and virtual assistant.
